As a Washington State Senator, Mullet has led the effort to have a balanced approach between the needs of tenants and the needs of housing providers.

While Mark was chair of the Financial Institutions and Housing committee (FIHI) every single bill that passed in the landlord-tenant space was supported by both landlords and tenants. Mark refused to allow anything out of his committee that was not balanced.  

In the 2016 session there was a compromise agreement around portable screening fees combined with a longer time period to return rental deposits so housing providers would have a better estimate of actual costs.

In the 2018 session Mark created the landlord mitigation account to make sure that landlords were not stuck with extra expenses as a result of the legislation expanding access of section 8 vouchers. 

Mark has been the key played in “fixing” bills that come out of the current Housing committee in the Senate. This most recent session Mark was responsible for defeating the attempt to remove the 1% cap on property taxes, the proposed REET tax increase from 3.5% to 4.5%, and a bill to start rent control in Washington.

Mark has always worked to find balance between the landlord and tenant groups. Mark feels strongly that if we want more housing in Washington, then we have to treat housing providers with respect and listen to their concerns. We look forward to you joining us on the 10th!
