The COVID emergency resulted in some of the most damaging rental housing policy proposals in recent memory. At times it has seemed like the tsunami of restrictive rental housing policies could not be stopped; however, thanks to RHAWA’s advocacy efforts and assistance from moderate lawmakers, we stemmed the tide in Washington State.
In the 2022 Legislative Session, RHAWA was incredibly successful in defeating a plethora of harmful pieces of legislation.
These detrimental and dangerous policies included:
-
Rent Control
-
Extension of the Eviction Moratorium
-
Unilateral Leases
-
Statewide Criminal Screening Ban
-
Removal of Three Strikes for Evictions
-
Additional Security Deposit Requirements
-
Statewide 180 Day Rent Increase Notices
-
Allowing Tenants to Sue Housing Providers Under CPA
This accomplishment would not have been possible without foundational work that RHAWA Political Action Committee (PAC) does year in and year out, helping moderate lawmakers get elected to and stay in office. We must continue to support our moderate friends, on both sides of the political aisle, who see housing providers as the key to workable housing solutions. In the 2021 election cycle we were incredibly successful in local Seattle elections: helping to elect Councilmember Sara Nelson, City Attorney Ann Davison, and Mayor Bruce Harrell.
The upcoming state elections provide a once in a generation opportunity to shift the legislative landscape away from the extremes and back to a moderate center, that will bring real positive changes to the Washington rental housing market. Fundraising season is just around the corner, and we are excited to introduce you to some fresh faces who can assist our efforts and continue to support our allies up for reelection.
Our success in the 2022 Legislative Session is a sign of a shifting tide in rental housing policies in Washington. This upcoming election is one of the most important elections we have ever faced. RHAWA is dedicated to improving the rental housing market for housing providers, but we need your help to protect the industry and your investment. Please help all housing providers by donating to RHAWA PAC.
In 2022 your support enabled RHAWA’s PAC to:
-
Support 18 statewide candidates for office and fun additional expenditures supporting pro-housing candidates in key races;
-
Support the expansion of a new candidate training program to equip candidates supportive of the rental housing industry with the skills needed to successfully run for office;
-
Fund the Rental Housing Association Coalition with over 10,000 housing provider participants meeting with state lawmakers.
Our government affairs team will continue to fight for your rights, and we cannot do it alone. Please help our industry by donating to the RHAWA PAC today.
